We’ve all had those moments in life when we drift off into another realm of thought, completely forgetting where we are and what we’re supposed to be doing.
Like standing up in the middle of the night, heading for the kitchen, and then completely blanking on what you were about to do - only to return with a glass of water you didn’t want, a snack you didn’t need, and slippers on the wrong feet.
But there are certain situations in life where staying alert is, let’s say, critical.
Driving, for instance. Operating heavy machinery. And, of course, attending a job interview.
Because nothing quite beats the sheer awkwardness of candidates who forget they’re in the middle of an interview and let their internal monologue spill out for all to hear.
So, for your amusement on this fine Friday, here are some of the most bizarre interview moments where candidates forgot that they weren’t just having a casual chat at the pub.
1. The Snack Attack
Imagine this: you’re midway through an interview, discussing the finer points of corporate strategy, when the candidate casually reaches into their bag and pulls out a bag of crisps.
Now, this alone isn’t entirely disastrous. People get peckish, after all.
But then the candidate proceeds to munch away, utterly oblivious to the fact they’re still in an interview, and talks about the role - between mouthfuls of prawn cocktail.
Pro tip: If you’re going to eat during an interview, at least bring enough for everyone.
2. The Accidental Nap
Ah, the post-lunch interview - always a risky proposition, especially if there’s a comfy chair involved.
One particular candidate found themselves in a warm office, with soft lighting and a full belly… and promptly nodded off halfway through explaining their career aspirations.
A gentle snore interrupted the hiring manager’s next question.
To their credit, they woke up after a few seconds, laughed it off, and actually got the job.
Turns out, the ability to nap on command was exactly what the company needed for their ‘Stress Management Expert’ position.
3. The Unexpected Doodle
Some people are visual learners, and others like to take notes. And then there’s the candidate who, midway through an interview, began doodling on their notepad, entirely absorbed in their artistic creation.
When asked about their skillset, they absentmindedly responded with, “Mmm, I’ve always been good at drawing ducks.”
The interviewer couldn’t resist a peek at the notepad, half-expecting a masterpiece. Instead, it was indeed a page full of ducks.
Memo to candidates: Perhaps save the avian artwork for after you’ve landed the job.
4. The Inner Monologue Escapes
There’s a certain freedom in discussing thoughts with yourself. But when you’re in an interview, it’s best to keep that inner dialogue… well, inner.
One candidate, after being asked about their strengths, paused thoughtfully and then accidentally voiced their inner pep talk out loud:
“Okay, you’ve got this. Just talk about leadership. Or was it teamwork? No, definitely leadership. Or should it be adaptability? Oh no, I’m doing it again…”
While the interviewer found it amusing, it didn’t exactly scream ‘confidence.'
5. The Wanderlust Mind
In the midst of discussing job responsibilities, one candidate began musing - aloud - about their dream vacation to Bali.
The interviewer, intrigued, gently steered the conversation back to professional achievements and adaptability… only to hear the candidate wistfully reply:
“That’s like when you’re on a beach and everything just fits into place…”
Inspiration can strike anywhere, but it’s possibly best not to let it strike during a job interview.
6. The Sudden Epiphany
Some candidates experience moments of sudden clarity during interviews. However, it’s essential to keep these moments relevant to the discussion at hand.
One candidate, reflecting on their previous role, suddenly exclaimed:
“You know what? I should really take up pottery. I’ve always wanted to mould clay with my hands.”
The interviewer, caught off guard, could only nod in bewilderment.
7. The Involuntary Comedian
Some people naturally find humour in everything, but perhaps one should exercise caution in letting jokes fly during an interview.
When asked about handling adversity, a candidate quipped:
“Well, I once survived my aunt’s broccoli casserole, so I think I can handle anything.”
While humour can break the ice, the candidate continued their culinary comedy routine for the next ten minutes, forgetting entirely about the job at hand.
