Unemployment is at an all time high, jobs are becoming more and more scarce and the economy is doomed…
Such sensationalism is courtesy of the UK press and if ever a nation was guilty of talking itself into a recession it is us. More worryingly though has been the attitude from some of those people who have unfortunately been made redundant or some of the long term unemployed. Our benefits system seems to make it all too easy for people to sit at home, whilst the constant flow of immigrants and “them taking our jobs” is being used from those who are too lazy to get re-qualified, re-trained or just go out and find work.
I think the time has come to radically change the benefits system – financially support those who need the support and reduce or cut the benefits for those who are just being lazy, but what political party would be brave enough to take such action.
It worries me when I hear stories from several friends that equate to people not taking responsibility for their lives and relying upon society to support them. One such friend highlighted when a youngster was recently asked where they want to go in their career. The reply was “I want to claim benefits.” It seems like the pride of the nation has gone and radical action is needed to rectify this.
An economist Milton Friedman once said that during a recession, there are a high number of people who would be considered to be “idle unemployed” – I remember in my Economics class all those years ago hearing this and laughing it off – how can you possibly get a society where people don’t want to work. Some 20 years on and I think we are there.
So, the message is clear – there are jobs out there, re-training is available to those who are unemployed, and the time for those people to take action is now.

I didn’t get a penny from the govt during my four months out of work. This was because my missus lived in the same house as me (funnily enough) and was picking up a wage. I spent every day of those four months diligently crawling through the job websites and applying for literally thousands of jobs.
But there are people out there who know the system well and are more than happy to sit at home festering in their pit whilst consuming hours of Jeremy Kyle/ Cash in the Attic/ Loose Woman and other such TV tat.
The system is just too easy for the long term unemployment to manipulate.
